Description
Appointed personal alchemist to Augustus the Strong, Johann Friedrich Böttger spent several years at court but was never able to produce the gold demanded by the Elector of Saxony. Instead, thanks to his efforts, he discovered the formula for making porcelain, which at that time was worth almost more than gold.
In the "Gold" pattern of the Meissen Cosmopolitan collection, the porcelain is plated with truly opulent bands of the precious metal. For this purpose, Meissen's specialist painters use fine burnishing gold, which is matt straight out of the kiln. The pattern gains its characteristic lustre through polishing with a sharpened semi-precious stone, an agate stylus.
The coordinating designs in "Mesh gold" offer a subtle counterpoint to these sumptuous pieces.
